July 6 - Vacuuming the Chicken Coup

A bit warmer today with a high of 84, til about 2pm quite still which means biting flies! Darn flies!

Another rough night for Dawson which meant also a rough night for his mom and dad! However Auntie Karol is NOT on night shift so I slept pretty good!

Anna went to look for the boys this afternoon to leave the baby monitor to keep an eye out for Dawson with Aaron and found Aaron, Stella (dog) and Bennett napping in the basement. Bennett had no pants on and holding a golf ball! No pants for Bennett is common! It just means he has needed to “pee” so off come the shorts and he heads for the bathroom, of course if he is outside it’s off come the shorts and just GO! Life of potty training a 3 year old in the country!

Chickens! I’m getting more and more experience with caring for chickens! This afternoon when I was pushing Anna for a project I could help her with, she said “well we could vacuum the chicken coup”. Me: Vacuum the coup?? Sounded pretty strange to me! I asked for clarification. She explained that she would be getting some broiler chicks in a few weeks and needed to deep clean one side of the chicken coup. The side that was previously last used for a couple of pigs…so it needed a good cleaning. So yet another first today! I helped sweep and vacuum the chicken coup while Anna moved 50# bags of feed and scraped some areas of the floor. Took us a little over an hour. When we finished the coup was sparkling and ready for the 40-45 broiler chicks (chickens raised specifically for meat production) that she has pre-ordered for the end of August. Anna will raise the broilers for about 7-8 weeks before processing/butchering them. That should set her up for having chicken for meals for the next year. (She still has about 8-10 left to eat before the end of October before the next batch of broilers are processed.

Before! It may not look too bad but trust me it was! And it was hot and dusty!

Making piles to sweep onto a shovel (acted as my dust pan) before vacuuming with a shop vac.

Looking pretty good here before things got a little messy.

After: Sparkling clean!
